The Daily Scoop

Someone on GoComics suggested they might be eating Rocky Road flavor! I originally had the one of the rabbits eating out of a bra but it didn't get past the censor.

Snow Rabbits

I just got back from a little getaway to the fine city of Vancouver, BC. Here are some snow rabbits I made on the top of Grouse Mountain.

Death Sells

Apparently the obit page is the most popular page in newspapers. I would have guessed sports or comic strips but I would be wrong. If you don't believe me listen to this fascinating interview with insightful newspaper guy Rus Wornom over at the always essential Tall Tale Radio.

Speed Racer

I cycle past one of these on my way to the library and it usually clocks me at around 11 mph.

Lines/Queues

Is there anyone who doesn't hate these snaking lines at the airport? It's especially irritating when there is no one waiting but you still have to walk through the maze anyway. I usually spend the time watching people take their shoes off and seeing how many of them have holes in their socks. It's quite a lot actually. Note the bluebottle (top right) with the baseball he caught the week before.

Cleverness Which Will Amaze You!

I recently discovered an amazing and strange library in San Francisco called the Prelinger Library. The collection is a beautiful array of strange ephemera, obscure pamphlets and wonerful oddities. Among the stacks I found a vintage magic catalog from the 1940s produced by a magician called Vick Lawston who died in 1998. $1 for the secrets to the "tray method" sounds like a bargain these days. The cartoon monkey you can see in the illustration is called Pumpernickel.

Bleugh!

This is pretty much how I was feeling when I drew this strip.

Bluebottle

I'm a Giants fan. This looks suspiciously like the old Candlestick Park stadium. Watch out for the bluebottle. He'll be making a guest appearance in a number of upcoming Sunday strips even though he's probably Dodger fan.

Layer Cake

My coloring process involves creating two layers in Photoshop. The front one has the black inking on a transparent background and the second layer underneath has the colors. Sometimes I accidentally mismatch the alignment and create the badly printed retro comics effect you see above. Er... so that's my blog entry for today.

Pavement Penmanship

The Pacific Gas and Electric Company are currently pouring concrete into holes all along our street which gave me the idea for this cartoon. Several people have already inscribed their names, tags, crude words and mysterious symbols in the sidewalk for prosperity. Writing your name in wet cement has to be the second most satisfying way of writing your name ever invented. The first of course is on the bottom of your slipper with a ballpoint. Or is that just me?

Rainforest Rock

There isn't a lot of music that doesn't sound better when you crank up the volume. The Bosavi music referred to in the strip is an actual favorite CD of mine which you can buy here.

Gulp.... Rabbits is One!

Huzzah! May 4th, 2008 was the day the very first Rabbits Against Magic strip (above) ran on Comic Sherpa so today is a milestone of sorts. It's been a wild ride for me. When I drew that very first surreal strip I had no idea where it was going, nor that I'd be able to keep up with the daily posting schedule. I had no main characters, no real premise, used a ruler on the borders for the first (and last) time and colored using watercolor paint. I just kept on churning out ideas and--for better or for worse--ended up with the strip you see today.

XXX Rabbits

This is a really early (and previously unseen) Rabbits strip that I didn't run on Sherpa because it seemed a bit risque (and not that funny). In case you can't make out the box it's Parcheesi.

Shiny Shoes

Since I always wear a stout practical pair of walking shoes when I travel, I usually end up at some point getting my shoes shined, which is not only a good way to keep up appearances but also an excellent way to interact with the locals. Many famous people were once shoeshine boys including the Godfather of Soul James Brown, influential African American Malcolm X, shamed Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich and current Brazilian president Luiz InĂ¡cio Lula da Silva. Super Shoeshine Fact: In La Paz, the capitol of Bolivia it's considered so shameful to be seen shining the shoes of a stranger for a living that most shoe shiners wear heavy masks so they can't be recognized.

Roll Over Rover Let Clover Take Over

I really liked the way in this strip that Trixie finally managed to get some sort of pleasure from interacting with Weenus.

No Cows and a Giant Chicken

When I first showed this to my editor, it was in black and white and he didn't understand it at all.

Lopes

This jackalope strip ran last week and by pure coincidence Steve Skelton over at 2 Cows and a Chicken ran a frogalope strip a few days later. As one person on GoComics pointed out, the jackalope tradition is alive and well in the desert southwest. The jackalope is also called an antelabbit, aunt benny, Rabbicorn, Wyoming thistled hare or stagbunny.

One of the many statistics you can get for your website is the "search query report". He's a sampling of phrases that people type into their search engines and end up at my site. I spend many sleepless night agonizing at the disappointment that they must experience.

Hat Loading

This is a small ad from a 1960s magic catalog. This is the "professional" version. I'd hate to seethe amateur model. If I was referred to as a "living load" I'd be against magic as well.
